Abstract
The Baskerville Project focuses on the meticulous digitisation and analysis of historical Baskerville typeface specimens and punches. The project is divided into several stages, each addressing different aspects of the digitization process. Each stage incorporates a research-led and systematic approach using cutting edge digitisation methods including 3D imaging including printed Baskerville books, and approximately 1700 punches. Latter stages explore advanced imaging techniques such as Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) and Photometric Stereo Photography to capture in hyper realistic micro-detail the surface of punches. The project also includes the standardization of punch rehousing using conservation-grade materials and the creation of ‘digital smoke proofs’ used for typography workshops.
